Homemade Red Sangria
With Spring here and temperatures rising, sangria is not only an easy party cocktail, but an awesome weekend drink just for fun.
I haven't had a ton of time in the kitchen lately, but an unfortunate wine purchase led me to make something great from it.
So, what should you do with that bottle of wine you bought at the store, tasted at home, and hated? Throw it out? Cook with it? Drink it anyway?
Why not transform it?
I just bought this bottle of cab that I couldn't stand. For the record it was cheap and I liked the label, so jokes on me. I made this super easy red sangria with the random things occupying my bar cart.
Prep Time: 10 minutes
Ingredients:
- Red wine of choice
- 2 Lemons
- 3 Limes
- 3 Mandarin oranges or 2 large oranges
- Cointreau
- Courvoisier
- Orange juice
- Brown sugar
Directions:
Pour the contents of the red wine into an easily shaken or stirred container. Slice the ends off of the fruit and continue to slice even, round pieces keeping the rind in tact. Add the slices to the wine and choose your liquor and brandy for your mix.
On hand I had Cointreau and Courvoisier. Cointreau being sweet and citrus flavored maintains the taste of the sangria and Courvoisier is a sweeter brandy. I added three, 1.5 oz. shots of each. If you do not have a jigger at home you can do 1/3 cup of each to taste.
Finally, add 4 tablespoons of brown sugar, stir and let sit in the fridge. Serves about two people, depending on how much a booze hound you and your friends are.
Happy sipping!
